Charpentier & contemporaries

Arcadia Summer 2020 will focus on the music from France, around the figure of the great Marc-Antoine Charpentier.
Charpentier was born in or near Paris and he spent two or three years in Rome, probably between 1667 and 1669 and studied with Giacomo Carissimi. He is also known to have been in contact with poet-musician Charles Coypeau d’Assoucy, who was composing for the French Embassy in Rome. A legend claims that Charpentier initially traveled to Rome to study painting before he was discovered by Carissimi. This story is undocumented and possibly untrue.. Regardless, he acquired a solid knowledge of contemporary Italian musical practice and brought it back to France.
Next to the usual chamber music sessions there will be a big “tutti” group, involving all the participants, making the main program of the course and presented to the public at the end of the week.
For whom?
Voices: Sopranos, Altos, Tenors, Basses (ripieni singers and soloists)
Instruments: strings (including viola da gamba), flutes, oboe, bassoon, harpsichord/organ, theorbo.
Pitch will be A=415, we prefer period instruments.

24 August: final concert of the participants (specific schedule will be announced during the week)
25 August: departure after breakfast
